The VSSO was again well represented at the annual ECVS meeting in Ghent, Belgium, and the ACVS Symposium in Chicago. The VSSO session for the ECVS meeting in July 2012 in Barcelona will detail what is hot in surgical oncology.
Surgical Oncology at Specialty Meetings
The Surgical Oncology textbook, edited by Drs. Simon Kudnig and Bernard Séguin and to be published by Blackwell, is in the galley proof stage and should be published by spring 2012.
The new edition of Withrow and MacEwen’s Small Animal Clinical Oncology is currently being written and should be ready for publication in 2012.
Surgical Oncology Textbook
Surgical oncology has been recognized as the first sub-specialty of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons as recognition of the level of expertise gained by Fellows during the Fellowship training programs.
New Fellows in current ACVS accepted programs at Colorado State University and University of Florida will be an ACVS Fellow in Surgical Oncology at the end of their training program.
ACVS Diplomates who have completed a Fellowship in Surgical Oncology can apply for ACVS Founding Fellow in Surgical Oncology. The procedure and requirements for applying for ACVS Founding Fellow in Surgical Oncology can be found here. Applications are due by 30th September, 2012.
ACVS Recognizes Surgical Oncology Fellowship
The first Scientific Meeting of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology will be held at the Hilton Hotel, Fort Collins, Colorado, on 24-25th May, 2012. Under the banner of “One Cancer”, the meeting will emphasize the translational nature of clinical research in oncology and will have four main themes: osteosarcoma, cancer management, targeted cancer therapy, and gamma versus surgery. Each session will have a keynote speaker who has made a significant contribution to the field, as well as start of the art lectures and short podium abstract presentations. The retirement of University Distinguished Professor Stephen J. Withrow will be held at Colorado State University on Saturday, 26th March, 2012, after the first Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology Meeting.
